JAPAN’S OEMS SLASH EXPORTS TO THE U.S. 79% IN JANUARY

The four major powersports vehicle manufacturers in Japan produced 55,045 units in January, down 37.2 percent compared to 87,667 units produced in January 2009. Exports to the U.S. plummeted 79.4 percent in the comparable months.

According to figures compiled by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), Honda produced 15,241 units in Japan in January 2010, down compared to the production of 23,197 units in January 2009; Kawasaki produced 8,400 units, down compared to 17,861 units; Suzuki produced12,847 units, down compared to 19,479 units; and Yamaha produced 18,555 units, down compared to 27,128 units.

The four manufacturers shipped 6,900 units to the U.S. in January, down 79.4 percent compared to 33,650 units in January ‘09.

The four manufacturers produced 644,901 units in 2009, down 47 percent compared to 1,226,839 units produced in 2008. Exports to the U.S. last year totaled 160,655 units, down 57 percent compared to 372,362 units in ‘08.
